Asian Openbill storks are found in India
and South-East Asia. They are mainly found
in inland waterways. Their main food source
is freshwater snails, although they will also
eat water snakes, frogs, and large insects.
They do not swallow snails whole, but separate
the body from the shell while the snail is
still underwater. Adults have a distinctive
gap between the upper and lower bill, which is
not present in young birds. It's thought that
this assists in the ability to break snail
shells. They breed after the rainy season,
when they make stick platforms in partially
submerged trees. They are colonial breeders,
nesting in large groups. They do not migrate,
but will move in response to food sources and
weather.
