| Formerly considered conspecific with the Peaceful Dove found in Australia, the Zebra Dove is now considered a separate species. It is a small, slender pigeon native to open habitats and scrublands across Southeast Asia. Characterized by its distinctive black-and-white barring and a familiar, rhythmic cooing call, this species spends a significant amount of time foraging on the ground, primarily feeding on small seeds, grasses, and occasional insects. It thrives in agricultural areas, parks, and urban gardens alongside human populations. Zebra Doves construct flimsy platform nests of twigs in low trees or shrubs where they typically lay a clutch of two white eggs. Due to its pleasant song, the species is widely kept as a pet and has been successfully introduced to various regions outside its native range, including Hawaii, Mauritius, and parts of Australia. | |||
