The Cactus Wren is the largest wren in North
America. It is well adapted to the arid desert
environments of the southwestern United States
and northern Mexico. It thrives in habitats
dominated by cacti, especially cholla and
saguaro, where it builds bulky, football-shaped
nests that provide protection from predators
and extreme heat. It is non-migratory and highly
territorial year-round, feeding primarily on
insects, spiders, and small fruits. Unlike many
birds, cactus wrens obtain most of their water
from food, an important adaptation to desert
life. Their loud, raspy calls and energetic
behavior make them a conspicuous and
characteristic bird of desert ecosystems.
