Hoopoe are found in Europe, Asia, North and
Sub-Sahara Africa, and Madagascar. They are
primarily insectivorous, ants and termites
are a large part of their diet. Occasionally
they will eat berries and seeds. They use
their long bill to probe under tree bark and
underground. They have strong claws to hold
large insects, and can catch insects in flight.
They nest in cavities in trees, and also holes
in walls and buildings. They will use abandoned
bird nests and nesting boxes. They lay four to
seven eggs, which are incubated by the female.
The eggs hatch in 14 to 20 days.
