Elephant Island, Antarctica

Day 12: January 24th

"We sighted Elephant Island this morning. The weather is foggy and there is almost no wind, and little swell. We came upon the island from the east, and saw Cape Valentine, where Shackleton's crew first landed. We proceeded along the south coast of the island, so we didn't actually see Pt. Wild, which is on the north shore. This is where Shackleton's men made their camp.

We anchored off Cape Lookout and proceeded to go ashore. This was Tony's (Tony Soper, our expedition leader) 12th time at Elephant Island, and only his 4th landing, so we are exceedingly lucky that conditions allow it."
